"The White Knight: Tirant Lo Blanc"

So let us do this: let us go back
to my lodgings, and I will give you a 'carte blanche' signed by
my hand, and sealed with my coat of arms. And you will arrange
the battle so that it's all to his advantage. Since he is the
challenger and I am the defender, and he is giving me the choice
of weapons, as he says in the letter, I willingly renounce the
choice, and I will let him choose whatever pleases him most. I
will do only what you say and order. And no matter how cruel the
weapons he chooses, you will tell him that I agree: that way my
glory will be even greater.'
"Tirant went back to his lodging with the king-of-arms, and he
immediately drew up the 'carte blanche.' That is, it was signed
by his hand and sealed with his arms; and he gave it to
Jerusalem, the king-of-arms.
"The king-of-arms departed to arrange the battle, and he searched
throughout all the king's and queen's estates. When he saw that
he could not find Lord Vilesermes he went into the city and found
him in a monastery of friars, where he was making confession.
